WACUBO 2023 DEI Conference Statement

As you may know, in 2017, the State of California instituted a ban on State-funded travel to states that have passed a law that authorizes discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, or voids or repeals existing state or local protections against such discrimination. During the Fall of 2022, Arizona was added to the list of banned states, due to legislation enacted last spring affecting transgender youth.

As stated in WACUBO’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Excellence, WACUBO values, champions, and creates a welcoming environment, inclusive of all personal and professional identities.  Further, WACUBO demonstrates its commitment to DEI by acknowledging systemic marginalization and injustices and practicing inclusivity.

When the California travel ban was first instituted, WACUBO was able to relocate a planned annual conference from a banned state.

However, given the timing of the recent additions to the travel ban list, WACUBO is unable to relocate the 2023 Annual Conference due to both contractual and logistical considerations.  We also recognize canceling the meeting in Arizona would create a serious economic impact on individuals working in the hospitality and service industries. Cancellation of the meeting at the Arizona Biltmore would have a disproportionate economic impact on service employees and local vendors delivering service and goods to the meeting industry.

We understand that some members of the WACUBO community, including some of our dedicated volunteers, will not be able to attend the conference in Phoenix this May due to the travel ban and that others will choose not to attend.  We regret this lost opportunity for greater learning from each other and connecting across our institutions.

To help achieve its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, WACUBO is taking steps to ensure this conference and future events are inclusive, including the following actions:

  • Offering pronouns on name badges (optional)
  • Working with the conference hotel to identify gender-neutral restrooms, if possible, and making clear that participants should use the restroom of their choice
  • Continuing to incorporate DEI content into professional development offerings and developing a diverse slate of speakers.

We are excited about the program for this year’s conference. In addition to offerings related to non-traditional student populations, financial systems and challenges, issues in athletics and campus operations, resiliency, and the new ways we work, this year’s program will include speakers and sessions covering the cost of racism, communicating across the political divide, implementing anti-racism initiatives, digital allyship, and developing and executing a lived name policy.

The WACUBO Board invites all members to join us at the annual conference in Phoenix and on our continuing journey toward diversity, equity, and inclusion

CPE Credits

Attendees can earn up to 3.5 CPE credits during the Pre-Conference workshops and up to 16.5 CPE credits during the conference.
